Paul Burkett is a shareholder in Rath, Young and Pignatelli's Tax Practice Group.  His practice focuses on federal and state tax matters, including business transactions, business formation and tax compliance, tax legislation, and tax audits.  Paul represents all forms of business entities (C and S corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies, joint ventures, and sole proprietorships) in every aspect of federal and state tax law. 

Paul is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy (B.S., English, 1987).  After his graduation, Paul served the country as a nuclear submarine officer, completing five strategic deterrrent patrols on board the U.S.S. Will Rogers.  Paul was twice awarded the Navy Achievement Medal.

Paul joined the firm in 2003 after spending seven years with the Washington, DC law firm Hogan & Hartson, L.L.P.   Paul spent four years at Hogan & Hartson in the tax group, where he represented clients in international and domestic tax planning, as well as advising clients in significant federal and state audit matters.   Prior to joining the tax group, Paul was a corporate and securities lawyer and represented several companies in initial public offerings and other transactions.

  • Representing privately held energy companies in developing and structuring alternative fuel projects, including tax-monetization transactions to capture the benefits provided by the Section 45 electricity production tax credit.
  • Representing a Fortune 100 company in restructuring its investment in a Section 29 synthetic fuel project.
  • Representing physician practice groups in forming and restructuring their businesses.
