Ann Kuster and Lucy Hodder Present at Annual Education Law Conference in Portland, Maine 2006July 25, 2007On July 25, 2007, Ann McLane Kuster and Lucy Hodder made a presentation -- "The High Wire Balancing Act: Juggling the Rights of Students, Parents, Health Care Providers and College Administrators - The Elizabeth Shin Case - A Case Study" -- at the University of Southern Maine's "14th Annual Education Law Conference. " To her parents, Elizabeth Shin was a model student, gifted musician and adoring daughter. To her therapist, this MIT sophomore “fluctuated between severe overwhelming anxiety and emptiness, both of which are unbearable and cause disturbing sudden onset of suicidal thoughts.” to college administrators, her death from “self-inflicted thermal burns” triggered a long and winding trail of litigation that will last well beyond her anticipated graduation. The presentation explores what the Elizabeth Shin case means for colleges and universities in the modern era and how they can balance the often conflicting demands of student privacy, parental concern and potential legal liability in the increasingly complex and stressful lives of college students. Sponsored by The University of Southern Maine, the "14th Annual Education Law Conference " is a professional development conference focusing on education issues and trends confronting New England schools. The seminar is designed for education administrators, faculty members, campus business managers, security administrators, human resource officers, registrars, career directors, admission directors, academic affairs officers, library directors, and other campus administrators and staff. Ann McLane Kuster and Lucy Hodder both have extensive experience creating practical solutions and approaches to the legal and policy challenges facing higher educational institutions.
