State Taxation of Executive Compensation -- "Touching All the Bases"

Chris Sullivan a shareholder in Rath, Young and Pignatelli's Tax Practice Group was recently a presenting speaker at The Deloitte National Multistate Tax Symposium held on February 6-8, 2008 in Orlando, Florida. Sullivan's presentation focused on the increasing trend and complex issues regarding non-resident personal income tax obligations of employees, particularly corporate executives. As recipients of executive compensation packages increase their mobility, numerous state tax issues arise including sourcing, withholding, residency and federal conformity. Sullivan and his co-presenter, Paul Buchman, Senior Tax Director of Tyco International Inc. provided a framework to identify these emerging issues and discussed practical ways to deal with the myriad of technical rules and potential state and local tax filing obligations.
