Tom Rath Discusses the Retirement of Justice David Souter on NHPTV's NH Outlook

June 7, 2009

As U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter prepares to leave the bench for the quieter life in New Hampshire he has longed for, several old friends gathered to discuss his career and his character. Rath, Young and Pignatelli founder and The Rath Group principal Tom Rath was among the panelists, who were interviewed by NH Outlook's Richard Ager.

Rath and Souter have been friends and colleagues for decades. They first met in the 1970s when they both worked at the Office of the New Hampshire Attorney General: Souter as Deputy Attorney General, and Rath as an attorney. Later, when Souter was promoted to AG, he appointed Rath his Deputy.

Panelists recall memories of Souter's history on the bench. "What you see in his collective opinion is a judge trying to get it right," explains Rath. When each panelist is asked what Souter's retirement means to them, Rath fondly responds: "What [his retirement] means most to me is that my friend is home."
