Tom Rath on CBS News Sunday Morning, Discussing the Importance of the Diner in New Hampshire's Primary

January 6, 2008

On January 6, 2008, Tom Rath appeared on CBS News Sunday Morning in a television story entitled, "Diners Key in New Hampshire Elections?" The segment's host, Mo Rocca, travels to several diners in New Hampshire. Tom offers commentary about the significance of the diner in the first-in-the-nation primary.

"In New Hampshire you go to the diners because that's where the people are," explains Tom, explaining the potential strategies of a presidential candidate. "You do it to say, I'm a regular person, I understand the way you live."

Tom also offers up suggested tactics for White House hopefuls, such as working the counter first, then switching to the booths. Even stops to the booths requires special choreography, expertly displayed by Tom in the segment.

"It's what New Hampshire does. New Hampshire goes out to breakfast."
