Kathryn Michaelis, Bill Ardinger and Stan Arnold Publish State Tax Notes Article on Vermont's New Unitary Tax Rules

State Tax Notes, July 2, 2007

Kathryn H. Michaelis, Bill Ardinger and Stan Arnold, all of the Tax Practice Group at Rath, Young and Pignatelli, P.C., have authored an article published in State Tax Notes on July 2, 2007, "Vermont Goes Unitary in 2006 and Beyond."

The article provides insights into several significant statutory changes to Vermont's corporate income tax regime beginning with the 2006 tax year.

The most noteworthy change is Vermont's shift from requiring separate company filing to mandatory combined filing for unitary affiliates.  In the wake of those sweeping changes, the Vermont Department of Taxes has promulgated new regulations, changed its form instructions, and issued technical bulletins addressing the new rules.  Despite the foregoing guidance, several questions remain unanswered for taxpayers facing the new regime.

Rath, Young and Pignatelli, P.C. represents clients on a wide range of state and local tax matters.  Since Vermont's enactment of its new unitary regime, we have been assisting clients in understanding the practical details of these important changes.

For more information on the article and Vermont's implementation of these new corporate income tax rules, please contact Kathryn Michaelis, Bill Ardinger or Stan Arnold.
